The Student Council.

DCS Student Council.

In Douglas Community School, there is an active and thriving Student Council.

Our Student Council is a body of students, elected by the students, for the students with a very simple, but important role:
to make our school a place of welcome, a place in which every student feels safe and have a voice in their own learning.

How does it work?

The council is made up of 15 students from the six year groups who meet every Friday at lunch time. Every September, each year group elects students to represent them at council level. Students can then bring any issues of concern to these representatives. The council in turn discuss these issues at their weekly meeting, and bring them to school management where they are takenare looked into. We are lucky in Douglas Community to have a Principal, Management and Teaching Staff who are always supportive and willing to truly listen to the Student Body. Thanks to this strong relationship between Management and the Student Council there have been many new initiatives introduced, including:

  • state of the art new benches for both assemblies

  • lunchtime microwave facilities for senior cycle students

  • concrete wheelchair accessible ramps

  • New student notice board

  • Slogan and logo competition

The student council is an intrinsically important aspect of school life. Our Council acts as a voice for every student but it is primarily a listening body. It works to create the best environment possible for learning and all-round student welfare thereby promoting wellness and student productivity. The council is always on the look out for new initiatives and most recently have surveyed students on introducing a school tracksuit and card payment facilities in the school canteen.
