Cansat
The school commences the project with a Micro computer called an Adrino Uno and the basic components of a rudimentary satellite. The group then has to create a working sensor system which can be loaded onto a basic platform that must fit inside a case the size of a standard soft drinks can.
It involves soldering, coding and design. Next the group must use a pair of wireless usbs to read the data from a balloon or in the final of the competition, from a rocket.
We have done very well in competitions to date but have also had the misfortune one year to lose the CanSat in a lake! Preparation and competing is always fun and a huge learning experience for students of all abilities.
The data must be represented as a set of graphs and presented as part of a Powerpoint presentation. It is a lot of work for participating students as it is considered the most challenging school competition in Ireland.
