Final score: Douglas Community School 4-18, Deerpark 1-5

Douglas Community School’s senior hurling team stormed into the County Final with an impressive win over neighbours, Deerpark on Friday September 21st.

The twenty-two point win was celebrated by the whole team, all of whom had performed outstandingly.

The game got off to a great start with the first goal of the game coming from Daniel Savage. A few minutes later, two more points were gained with no response from Deerpark.

Points kept flying Douglas’ way, but when a long ball fell into the box, an unstoppable close range shot rattled the Douglas net. However, the leaders weren’t discouraged, and one minute later scored again with another Savage goal.

DCS started the second half with a nine-point lead to keep. At first, it seemed a difficult task, with Deerpark’s speedy keeper moved to the half back line. In no time, Deerpark had boosted their score by three points.

In spite of this, excellent work from the defence, and quick, secure actions from Douglas’ goalkeeper, Luke McGrath, provided a match for the rapid revival. It was clear that at this stage, the competitors’ comeback was getting increasingly difficult.

A penalty awarded to Douglas mid way through the second half was missed by Daniel Savage, but Douglas’ top scorer (3-11) quickly made up for his mistake with a rocket of a shot sent into the top left corner of Deerpark’s net.

A few well taken points later, the fourth goal came; a fourth and final nail in the coffin for the Deerpark side. A last minute point provided little consolation for the team who had fought so hard to get to this stage in the competition.
