DCS U16 Basketball Team win All-Ireland Final in Thrilling 4-Point Game.
Douglas Community School (55) v Summerhill Sligo (51)
On Thursday 21 March, Douglas Community School were crowned U16A All-Ireland basketball Champions, capping off a fantastic year for basketball in the school that also saw the U19 team winning the Cork County Championship and achieving bronze in the All-Irelands.
In the U16A final at the National Basketball Arena, Douglas Community School got off to a great start with big scores from Liam Harris, Jack O Mahony and Gary Pineda. Summerhill battled hard but DCS were unstoppable – we took a 10-point lead early in the first quarter and maintained this lead with scores from Adam Walsh, Kevin Brennan and Alan Morgan.
Summerhill came out strong in the third quarter, and with Jack struggling with an injury they narrowed the lead to 4 points. But this DCS team had been here before over the past two years and were not going to lose this final. With Rory Barry and Adam Walsh stepping up, and with Captain Liam Harris encouraging the team, DCS prevailed on a score line of 55 to Summerhill’s 51.
To crown a superb performance, Liam Harris was deservingly awarded MVP. The team were overjoyed with the win, and were grateful for the great support they received from the enthusiastic sporting supporters from the school. Their fantastic achievement is a testament to the hard work put in this year, and over the last few years, by a great group of dedicated students and staff. Particular mention must go to Ms O Callaghan and Mr O Loughlin for their unstinting commitment to the team. Congratulations to all involved!
