TV3 visit DCS: One Book, One Community

On Monday 2 February 2015, Douglas Community School was happy to welcome TV3 news to the school as they covered the launch of our large scale literacy initiative entitled One Book, One Community.

The project involves different groups in the community coming together to read the same novel over a seven week period. Throughout this time, various activities are organised, to allow the different groups to mix, talk about the novel and work together on various tasks.

This year we’re happy to be working with the fifth class students from St Columba’s BNS, Scoil Nioclais and Gaelscoil na Duglaise. We are also joined by Douglas’s senior citizens’ group Young at Heart and other book clubs in the Douglas area.

In total over 400 hundred participants will read the novel Wonder by RJ Palacio, including our own first years and two second year classes. Our Transition Year students will be running the activities which include paired reading, creative and functional writing classes, arts and crafts and group discussions.

We wish all this involved the best of luck in their efforts.
