It was a busy weekend of action for the Douglas Community School athletes.
At the Munster Juvenile Even Age XC Championships in Beaufort Co Kerry the athletes were in superb form. The u14 team came 6th, narrowly missing out on a place at the All Irelands by 10 points, with Andrew Turner a superb 4th place individual and great runs by Ciaran Couch, Daniel Hurley and Aaron Ahern.
The u16 team ran strong throughout their 4000m race with Liam Harris leading the way in 3rd place, and the team took the gold medals with other great runs by Stephen Cotter, Luke Varian and Evan Byrne.
The u18 team also won gold, with Jamie O Connell leading them home in 5th place with a great run out of his age. Behind him John Durcan stormed through the field to finish in 14th with Eoin Boruke a superb 17th. Next up for the team is the Munster Uneven Age XC Championships in 3 weeks time.
In other news this week, Alan O Donovan won the First Year XC League this year, and is pictured above being awarded the tophy by Mr. Jim Long. The First Year XC League is held every year to introduce 1st year students to XC (cross country, for those not in the know!) running. It is held over a 900m loop at the school and all 1st years take on the challenge. This year’s winner Alan also broke the course record previously held by Emmet Bracken.
