Gaisce at Douglas Community School

Gaisce – The President’s Award is Ireland’s National Challange Award for young people, and it is the most prestigious award in Ireland for people between the ages of 15 and 25. The awards are based on personal challenges where students have to volunteer in their local community, set personal goals in relation to physical activity and personal development, and finally plan and organise an adventure activity as part of as team.

Participation in the Gaisce Awards programme has been a very important aspect of the DCS Transition Year programme over the past number of years and this year we were delighted that 38 students from the our current 5th and 6th year student body recieved their ‘An Gaisce’ Awards. 37 students received the Bronze Medal Award, while Kiran Chopra went a step further and earned the Silver Medal Award. Mr Long, Principal, presented the awards to the students during a whole school assembly to recognise the effort and dedication shown by the students during the past two years to achieve this level of attainment.

Congratulations once again to this year’s winners, and I look forward to working with the current Transition Year students, 45 of whom are taking part in the Gasice Programme at the current time.
