It has been a hugely successful couple of weeks for the Douglas Community School athletes on the competition front. At the IAAF Antrim International Cross-Country event the u17 team of Billy Murphy, John Durcan and Jamie O’Connell won the team event with a super display of running. Billy led the team home with a great 10th place finish over the 5,600m course. At the South Munster Schools Cross-Country Championships the school retained the best overall school cup for a record eighth consecutive year, a superb achievement. The minor team were second led by Ben Smith, Dylan Kelly, Sean Barber and Michael Scully. The junior team came 2nd also led by Alan Morgan, David Smith, Evan Byrne and Jake O’Connor. The Intermediate team came first led by a super run from Liam Harris in second place and he was followed closely by great runs from Alan Ring, Jamie O’Connell and Brendan Couch. The best was saved for last with our senior team winning the senior team title for the seventh consecutive year and in the process equalling the great North Mon’s number of consecutive senior titles. They were led home by Cullen Lynch in a superb second place with other great runs from Emmet Bracken third, Billy Murphy fourth and John Durcan 10th. The performances on the day were all dedicated to DCS student and close friend of the team, Erbie Underwood, who passed away two weeks ago. There was a minute’s silence before the start of the senior race and the team wore black arm bands in his honour. This season is for you Erbie.
